Has anyone ever sold there fruit and veg what they have grown on the allotment, you know put a sign out and an honesty box saying take what you want leave what you want? Just wondered.
Just be careful RC; the general allotment 'rules' say that you aren't supposed to sell it, it is supposed to be to feed the family not to make a profit; so check your local guidelines!
in the allotment section here there is a copy of the allotment holder's handbook....you might want to have a look at that before you do anything.
One of the plots near me (not the one I'm on) have a couple of general sales each year of young plants and produce but not sure if the money goes to the individuals or to the committee. Personally never sold any of mine but do use a lot of it in presents when made into jam / chutney / drinks etc.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
I have an honesty box for eggs, even though I'm not supposed to. With veg I would just ask for a donation as if you charge a price you my fall foul of the weights and measures dept? Selling produce to donate the proceeds to a charity may cause the officianado's to 'turn a blind eye'..........possibly!
Allotments are really for feeding your own family and it says somewhere in the small print that you can't sell produce from them.
To be honest, you have to think about the thousands of people on allotment waiting lists who would like to have the opportunity to feed there own families..........if they see allotmenteers selling produce they aint going to be too happy!
My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order to present to him vegetables and all beautiful flowers.- Offerings of Thutmose III to Amon-Ra (1500 BCE)
I agree that a few people might raise an eyebrow given the waiting lists in most places - certainly check the wording of your contract if you have one. If it's genuine glut/surplus then maybe a case for it, but I'd feel more comfortable giving it to friends/neighbours etc.
We had a local fruit and veg shop owner trying to buy surplus veg from our allotment. Don't think they got any joy though as no one was will to risk loosing their plot. I'm not so sure that lotties are supposed to be for feeding a family when you look at the amount of runner beans each plot holder seems to grow around here.(enough for 10 families) Technically they could also be used to just grow flowers?? Or like on a previous site where a Polish gentleman was growing opium poppies for the resin.
I give my surplus away to friends and family. Mind you there is one guy on my site who seems to grow an awful lot of spuds and cabbage to feed family and friends!!!!!!! He doesn't seem to grow anything else.
I have had no success selling surplus veg, but I grow and sell young plants from a stall outside the house and these sell well. I already have people asking for squashes, peppers and chillies for next year! I am raising some busy lizzies as house plants for the winter at the moment. I'll let you know how they do.
I love it when I visit my folks in norfolk and they have hoinesty boxes. Alwyas good stuff and good value. Have thought about it, but have never had a glut of anything really (although seem to have planted too much curly kale)
Also it would asll get knicked round here!!!
