I recently rescued a wooden box from a skip. It has 24 modules about 4" square and is about 24" deep. Do you think it is too late to try some big carrots or parsnips? Would I use just normal seed and can I half fill with sand and then compost on top?

Try it with carrot Autumn King, Flo - I'd go with the half and half option - nothing ventured, nothing gained! Let me know if you'd like some seeds.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Try to keep the compost texture the same all the way down, as a change in texture can cause forking. Mix the sand and compost together then fill your box.

Thanks both. I'll mix it Ian - I was going to put sand in the bottom half and compost in the top, so thanks for the advice.

I've mixed sand and compost too - then sowed in seed sowing compost on the top (wanted to use it up) - had some really good carrots.. Autum King though, are pretty tasteless compared to Early Nantes in my opinion... Not sure if they need a frost or something to taste better?
