What about rolling the clay ball in poppy seeds, like a scotch egg. Or if not seeds other things that you can easily get hold of, like sawdust?

My initial thought was things like rice paper, edible knickers type of thing?

Paper bag, but if it's very wet to then placed in a soup/milk carton.

How about rolling them in meadow hay fastened on with string - then put in an egg box? They could then be hung up to dry when they get home.

Cling film or greaseproof paper? Neither of which is bio degradeable though.
Rolled in bran and popped into a paper sweetie bag would also work if they weren't sopping wet!

Get the kids to bring a recycled yoghurt pot with them to bring the bomb home with. Or, ask for donations of yoghurt pots now and just use them.
At least they are getting reused once, then you can also let them know they could use them as seed pots afterwards. Or even maybe recycle them*

I think I'll get together a list of different ways; and ask the staff at work to donate some and make sure they are there for the event; the kids won't know they are doing it until they get there so that's out.

Anything like a yogurt pot can then be tied into the One Pot Pledge that we run, so they can go home with a seed bomb, a yogurt pot with instructions to reuse it and the website to sign up.

What a load of fab ideas!

                  Cheers guys.

Not entirely recyclable but what about old modules that can be cut individually.

                      Loo roll tubes?

Love the 'roll in seeds' idea, but that could make them look edible!

Yes, it is brekkie time, sorry.

Great ideas here. We make them with local wildflower seeds, re-used compost and coffee grounds for our Village in Bloom - they are chucked along the hedge bottoms and verges on the edge of the village. However, this means we don't transport them far. They are surprisingly successful - we had loads of red campion this year. Cut up egg boxes would give each little bomb an egg cup if its own. I like this idea.
