2 Sophie's Choice popped through yesterday and 2 Golden Sunrise are showing through the compost this morning.

Can anyone explain the 55 days relating to Sophie's Choice? Does it mean 55 days from germination to flower or from flower to ripe fruit? Surely doens't mean 55 days from germination to ripe fruit or everyone would grow them!

Blimey Lyndap how many plants are you thinking of growing on if you've got 30 seeds germinated?

We normally plant 2 tom seeds for each plant we want to grow.

shirl, the 55 days is certainly the time to fruit, but I can never remember from when, to when!

If the pack of seeds is free,I just bung the whole lot in! If they all germinate and survive potting on then they get sent around to family and friends. If any left after that, sell them for funds for grandsons nursery.I just get a huge buzz out of sowing seeds and dont mind giving the plants away

Way to make us all envious - if I put mine outside they would blow away! Like your pots, that is a brilliant way to get nice depth for strong plants!

                      Biscombe,
The tomato varieties that you're growing, if you saved seed from them, would they come true to type? If so, please save some seed for us all for sowing next year...... I'd just LOVE to try some of them out, and I'm sure I'm not the only one?!

biscombe, wonder if you could tell me if you have used those types of containers before? I have been collecting cups from work over the winter, the brown ones from the vending machines and also the clear ones used for water. I have since read somewhere that the clear ones are no good as light can get to the roots I wasn't sure how badly this would effect the plant so am looking for alternative ways to use 200 cups?

Would'nt think any harm would come to your seedlings in the plastic. You're not going to leave them in the plastic cups indefinitely.
If you are really worried you could wrap the cups in newspaper and secure it with an elastic band
                                Hopes this helps

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
