    Hello everyone,

I am new to this group and new to veggie growing. I decided to start with pumpkin, but not sure if they are growing as they should be and hoped for some advice please.

The plant it's self has taken over my patch...big healthy looking leaves etc. I have male and female flowers and have been helping out with pollination with a little brush.

I had 2 fruits on one vine growing, thought not more than a tennis ball size. I chopped off the smaller one yesterday and reduced the canopy of leaves from overhead. I've put straw underneath. I've inspected the vines and they look healthy with no obvious signs of pests. I have let the rain water them - we've had a lot!)

AM I doing this right? Is there anything else I should feed it with. (I've used well rotted chicken manure). Should the growth rate be more?

    Thankyou for listening.

    Best Wishes

I'm no pumpkin expert but mine seem to be doing well. I have just left mine too it. When I got 2 fruits next to each other I left them and 2 tended to grow and the other turned to mush and was removed. I have also noticed its not always the one that starts of the biggest either which is why I don't remove 1 straight away. Not all of my plants have produced fruits either so I guess it just the luck of the draw. Good luck with yours!

Can't help with your pumpkins Reachersgal, I'm having enough trouble with my butternuts! BUT you are bound to be asked to place your general location on the vine as it helps others help you.
Welcome to the vine by the way.

Last year I had two good-sized pumpkins on one plant. I gave the plant beer about every two or three weeks, diluted with plenty of water of course.

I saw this on one of the allotment programmes a few years ago, a man used to give the pumpkin beer every day. He was growing for the local show.

This year, I bought a bargain four-pack but it's sitting there unopened - because the plant has produced just one big marrow. Even though it's not my tipple, I'm not giving away beer to a marrow!
