Daft question about onions - weight

Okay ... This is probably a silly question, so please excuse me ...

I'm about to buy some Troy onion sets from Suttons but I've never ever SEEN onion sets in my life, never mind planted and grown them. So, apparently they're sold in packs of 200g but I have absolutely no idea how this translates into number of onions.

Has anyone got any idea, even just a ballpark figure, of how many onions you'd get out of 200g? I just can't visualise it all!

You'll get about 50 sets in 200g

Hard to say as some sets are larger than others...probably about 40-50 ( let us know!!!)

Thanks for the info on this. I had the same question as I've recently bought 3x250g of onions plus 25 shallots by mail order from Mr Fothergills.

I think I have some measuring and calculations to do!

I have ordered 400g of onions from Tuckers Seeds - they say that it is approx 100 sets. I have room to plant about 80 of them - I expect about 20-30% will fail or be very small (and end up in chutneys!) and the rest will see us through the summer until the winter savers are ready. The main thing is to get them in the ground so that they can make a good start on growing before the really cold weather comes along. Ours managed to survive the snow this year, I think mainly due to the fact that they were advanced enough to handle it. I haven't received my order yet but the old hands at the lottie have been putting theirs into the ground this week.... Hope this helps a bit

Do a search for the Square foot gardening thread on here somewhere. You'd be pleasantly surprised how close you can plant the sets and get excellent harvests. I planted mine in grids 4" apart in all directions, so roughly 12 onions in a square foot and they were all excellent.

If you can buy sets loose at the local GC they are a lot cheaper. I got a fill a bag yesterday for £1.29 and there was well over 120 sets in the bag, (only one variety available though).
