If you have enough seed tatties try some in a bucket, you are much further south than I am. Just make sure you give them some protection in case of frost. It is only one potato that you stand to lose.
I got some big planters from Asda for £2 just drilled some drainage holes in the bottom, got them at the side of the house so I can cover when needed,
Anthony, have look for some of the older threads about growing spuds in tubs - there are a few of them around. I'm sure you'll find the answer to your question and to any others that might pop to mind!!
I put my first early's in last week, put them in and pull the rows up it will take about 4 to 6 weeks before they appear and keep your fingers crossed and a roll of fleece ready just in case we get a frost
Anthony I think salad types & first & second earlies are best in tubs, I think main crops need a bit more room to get a crop worth using, but you could always try just a couple of tubers in a large pot- just wouldn't get many chips or much mash out of it!
Monty Don suggests first earlies can go in this weekend if ground is suitable. As it has been too wet and cold i will be holding on a couple of weeks at least.
