  • plant in new raised bed

I'm a gardening novice, am about to build a raised bed and since summer is nearly over, wondered what veg would be best to plant at this time of year.
    thanks

Hello there - welcome to the vine!

If you check out this thread from BigMally - he's included a link to a planting calendar: http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...dar_45966.html

Mainly you'll be looking at Mustards, Salad Leafs and Oriental Greens (i.e. the mustards)

    Good luck!

Or if you buy small plants then you could put in some winter brassicas now for overwintering - e.g. sprouting broccoli. And then you could use the same bed for certain crops from late spring next year (although you couldn't use it for things that have to be sown in early spring)

I'm a newbie too so still in experimenting stage! I am planting garlic bulbs (Solent Wight) and overwintering broad beans (Aquedulce) in October. I believe the garlic will be ready to lift by next July and the broad beans should be harvested and out of the way by next June.

or if you think you may be unable to plant how about a green manure to prevent leaching and keep down the weeds while it improves the soil overwinter

Brilliant, thanks for the ideas, I'd never heard of green manure before. I'm going to sow garlic for sure as we eat a ton of it and as we are on the coast near the I.O.W. I'll try the varieties they seem to be known for, maybe even some elephant garlic! Any other suggestions welcome.
