Hmm what to plant first ...

Good evening !

I am a sorta newbie to gardening and growing my own, this year i grew potato's, lots of salad leaves, tonnes of toms, peppers, garlic, carrots, butternut squash and some very manky looking cauliflowers that i let the slugs have as they looked rank

Now i have gone wild with buying seed i have bought

Tomatoes - 7 different kind
Garden peas
Beetroot
Red and white onions
Garlic
Radishes
Chillis
Peppers
Salad leaves
Carrots, yellow, purple and white.
Potatoes
Strawbs
Runner beans
Cucumbers
Winter dumpling squash
Pattypan squash
Uchiki kuri squash
Coriander
Chives
Garlic Chives
Basil
Purple basil
Rosemary
Thyme
Figs - i have bought a fig tree
Bayleaves
chocolate habaneros - ive just bought a beautiful plant im gonna bring him in the winter and see if he survives
bloody butcher sweetcorn
white pattypans
spagetti squash.


- rather ambitious i know.

Now there is one major drawback i have i cannot put anything into the ground most of that will work in tubs, but what do i plant first.

Quite a list, Shirleybobs, and welcome to the Vine... At this time of the year (assuming your 'hill with planes' is in the UK) many of your seeds will be best kept for Spring 2011 (no problem, keep in their packets in a cool dry place) but because you've got so many you'll need to check individual packets for best advice and make a timetable. Many sites can assist in this, for example Real Seeds have a list of seeds to plant in autumn and winter at

and down the left-hand side there's a long list of various seeds each with a separate page advising when to sow, how long to crop etc.

Yes im in the uk in the south west, they are all put away for next year at the mo.

Quite worried about growing sweetcorn tho it can get mighty windy here.

Being in the SW you should have the longest growing season so can probably start seeds earlier than many of us would dare.... Your "bloody butcher sweetcorn" is an heirloom variety (red, as the name suggests!) and presumably you'll start it off in modules inside or in greenhouse and plant out in square blocks to maximise pollination. You're right that sweetcorn doesn't particularly like strong winds so try to give a spot with some protection... It might also help to plant slightly closer than the books suggest and add the odd firm stake to assist stability. Also once growing, heap some additional soil around the lower stems which will encourage the development of additional roots to assist stability. I was reading that i should do that, but i like being told sometimes .

Im hoping that we have a good summer here next year as it has been cracking here, unlike my poor mum in liverpool who has had a dire summer with the rain.

Im going to get another culti cave this winter so ill have 3 next year to start things off in as we cannot put up any permanant structures here.

what do i plant first.

Your seed packet will tell you when to sow or plant. If you sort them into a folder, ordered by month, you can see at a glance what needs sowing. In September: not a lot, mostly salads and radishes

Ha ha... your story sounds exactly like mine! This was my first growing year and it started with a friend of mine giving me a few lettuces and courgette plants in June. Well in a couple of weeks I was dragging my poor hubbie down to the garden centre for more and more seeds, veg plants and pots and have managed quite a good harvest this year - my toms, salads and courgettes have been particularly brilliant

I now too have an extensive seed collection and can't wait for next Spring to start sowing away as I feel I missed most of this season. Your squash collection is rather exciting... love patty pans but haven't been able to get my hands on any seeds yet

I use premier seeds direct on ebay and i found some in homebase as well.

I found some pattypan in lidl/aldi last year for about 69p I think.
