Newbie here hi and help with chilli plants

Hi all I have read your forum for a while now and I have just got in to growing chillis I know it's the wrong time of year but got
My jalepeno plant 3 of them and they are about 14 inches tall with about 16 or so flowers just starting to flower

My question is I would like to grow them over winter they are on a windowsill in my house with heat not dropping below 14degrees c and I also have a strip light above them with a cool White bulb in an that's on 10 hours a day giving them light

I have also arriving tomorrow 2 piri piri plants, Dorset naga and a black pearl

Would I be ok in growing them over winter in this method and will I see fruit over winter too hope fully then in spring I will be getting a green house

Hi there. Not totally sure of the answer but the lowest temp should be ok & the extra light will help...watch out for 'bugs' over winter as there's no predators about. Give it a go and see...

It might help if we knew where you were living, as the further south the higher the chances.

As I've said many a time on here, I grow mine up to and including Christmas, and have grown peppers and chilis outdoors on a balcony near Nottingham; and others have overwintered chilis - so it's worth a try.

There's an overwintering chillies thread on here, I'll dig it out for you.

I've overwintered, but all the leaves drop off; definitely no flowers or fruits going on

Welcome to the Vine Winnie. I've never had much luck overwintering chillies, but the conditions you describe should be OK. Can you add your location to your profile please, then we will know whereabouts you are. Good luck with the chillies.

I live in kings Lynn Norfolk so lots of sun lol.

My jalepeno plants are all ready flowering now so hopefully they will fruit and with the extra light and heating hopefully they will think they are still in summer but so far so good thanks for the advice

So no one has tried to grow and fruit over the winter indoors hopefully I will have some luck.

i think you should be ok.....you'll probably need to have the light on longer during the depths of winter....you'll probably have enough heat from the lamp if you made a reflective box to keep them in.

hi there regards to choice of bulb to use i am currently using a 4foot flurescent strip light above my plants with a cool white bulb 4700K heat temp is this bulb better it has more blue light in or should i use a warm white bulb which is 2700K colour temp which has more red in than blue

my plants are just starting to flower now any help needed as i dont want them to die over winter if i can help it they will be in the greenhouse in spring if they survive

any help much apprecated or i could rotate the 2 bulb every few days as a idea

Yes they have, but without excellent results
Winter is when plants are naturally dormant. If you want to be unnatural, and force them to fruit when they want to be asleep, you have to decide if the extra money & effort is worth it.
You can have all the chillies you want if you grow them in the summer

I overwintered last year, got fruit too but then by the spring the plant popped its cloggs.
I am not planning on overwintering any of mine - but it might be worth it if you have a favourite?

I think (although not 100%) that its the blue light your after.....
there are lots of factors that effect fruit setting...especially being indoors (try a search on here) pest will be an issue to......
there's lots out there about growing indoors with lights (check out chillisgalore)
