  • I havent been here for a while but i need you advice!

Due to loosing my login details, having family turn up here in the Falklands, new additions to the family (not me personally!!) and me having to spend much more time knitting and cooking (and drinking ) i didnt really have any time at all in my garden last year. I managed to grow some spuds but that was it. So with all these things i never really had chance to check in. But i needed some help so remembered where the best place to get it would be.

Just to remind you that we are just heading into our summer time, so on Sat i planted some seeds into trays, cabbage, beetroot, swede peas and broad beans etc, i am not kidding you by the Tue they had all started coming through. I am worried that there going to get too leggy before i can put them outside. Its still rather cold here but were getting much more sun which is great.

What do you all reckon? Its only Thur, so they have only been in the soil 6 days and they are all about 2cm tall?

    Cheers

    Hi W2S

Not familiar with the microclimates in the falklands!!...what temp is it at night?

All of the above are fairly hardy, and could be introduced to a cold frame(or a sheltered sunny spot) during the day at first then maybe set out (under cloches if necessary)

      Hi there.

Well the seeds are in the house, day time 20 degrees night time we put it down to 15 but like i say its still cold outside (about 7 degrees) but we have clear blue skys. If i were to take a pic you would all think its tropical!

Right so this weekend there going to be big grown up seeds and get to play outside during the day

      Cheers

Taking them from 20deg out to 7deg will probably kill them, they will stand the 7deg but need to be introduced to it gradually. Have you got a cold frame that you gould put them in for a week before putting them out in the big wide world.

          Hi Ian

Yes, my hubby is going to put the cold frame up this weekend, we have a nice big window to use.

Even though the sky is nice and blue and the days are getting longer its still cold. Mind saying that we only get 20 tops in the summer with strong winds. So we have to grow things close to the ground or under cover.

          Thanks

          Gina

I'm soooo jealous...your just going into summer, I don't think ours really arrived although its nice and sunny today. I would think as long as your seedlings have plenty of natural light they should be OK.
I'd also like to welcome you back to the vine *G.N hold her hand out to shake*. xx

Cold frame is just what is needed...to keep them out of the cold wind.....most seedlings will go leggy and soft inside the house... it is just too warm. Bring em in at night to start if you like but grow them hard!...its tough love Gina

                Please do post a piccy.
