I have done water and straight compost cuttings, I find there isn't much difference but agree with Flum that you can obviously see the root development in water.

Of 2 brandywine and 2 gardener's delight potted straight into compost - just 1 gardener's delight seems to have recovered, the rest just look withered.

2 of each also stood in water about a week ago - all four are showing roots.

My Costoluto Fiorentino cuttings seem to be surviving the winter and look in need of potting on , the Roma ones look a bit sad not sure if they'll make it......

                  french black tomatoes

I always grow too many tomatoes, I get told off every year by o.h. but love to grow old favourites - Golden Sunrise and Tigerella, Moneymaker, Gardeners delight plus a selection of ones I haven't tried before. This year this will be Sungold, Green grape, Marmande and some more I haven't decided yet.
French black sound really good, where can I buy some from please?

My cuttings - of 2 of my home-bred toms - are very leggy but have lots of side-shoot cutting material which is just the job.
I'm also sowing seeds of these 2 types as I want a reproducable tomato.

My overwintered plants are looking a bit tatty at the mo. One didn't make it and two have had flowers on for quite a while now, but look very sorry for themselves. I had decided I wasn't going to bother again until yesterday, when I spotted that one had actually set fruit. In March I think it's a yellow cluster pear. Hope so cos all the ones I started from seed are doing rubbish. Again.
