    A plot neighbor kindly gave me some borlotti beans with the intention that I should cook and eat the beans fresh. I've admired the beans all season (they're very pretty) and I'm now wondering if it would be possible to dry the beans out on a sunny windowsill and sow them next year? The pods have gone leathery, but they're not dried out yet.

    How long have you had them, and how leathery are the pods? You certainly could dry them and save for sowing if they are ripe enough. Borlotti are lovely beans.

      No problems. Yes, a sunny windowsill will probably do but I just leave mine in the airing cupboard on a sheet of newspaper. They will grow readily from the dried beans but if you want to eat hem don't forget to soak them and boil them for a couple of weeks to get the toxins out of them
      You're right, they are very pretty and I love them. They are very versatile and the fresh beans taste lovely and... especially good for me - they are very easy to grow

          Yup, I had to read it twice as well .

          I've been drying lots of beans for stews over the winter. If the skins are leathery the beans shouldn't be far from being dry enough to store.

            He gave them to me only a few hours ago. So I'm going to give drying them a go - even the beans inside the pods are pretty to look at (a few are starting to pop out of the pods)!

              Haha, OK, well, I might have been exaggerating just a teensy bit but they do need soaking for a long time and boiling well.
