Alderman Peas

We tried these for the first time this year. They seem to be highly recommended in magazines and on radio programmes.
Ours were a disaster. Low germination rate. A refusal to climb round the poles.
Very low yield on what did fruit.
Other peas planted alongside were fine.
Would appreciate hearing others experiences with this pea.

Peas can't actually climb poles, they cling with small tendrils, so netting works better for them.

I grew mine last year.
I'd agree about climbing-no discipline at all-had to tie up some of them to the canes.
Seeds-mine were fine,no probs with germination(King seeds),maybe you've just had bad luck?
Yield-very high,plenty of pods with up to 10 peas in the pod.Must watch the picking time,if you miss it they become bitter.
Alderman is VERY high growing pea and needs good support-my plants collapsed under its own weight(both wigwams)
That was my experience with Alderman,hope you'll have better ones in the future

I've never grown Alderman, but my peas in general weren't great this year. I sowed them later than usual and they really suffered in that long hot, dry spell we had. Pretty low yield on all of them except Gladstone and Lancashire Lad. They did pick up a bit later in the season when it finally rained, but overall yield was poor.

Whereabouts are you in the country The BP? It does sometimes make a difference to advice given

I haven't grown Alderman but I will next year in my move to tall peas from low ones - less bending over! I grew Ne Plus Ultra and Champion of England, both up nets and both gave great yields for a long time. I think it's down to watering, I watered early in the morning every day during the dry weather and both varieties grew to 7ft or so.
