  • Peas!

    My peas have sprouted!

I've got Feltham First in drainpipe halves in my (unheated) greenhouse and I took the fleece off them this morning and there were 8 little shoots poking through the soil!

I would have told Mr OWG, but he has been on nights and so was in bed, so I thought I'd tell you lot instead!

Pea peas, as I plan to grow lots and freeze them for later in the year

They are the first ones I've grown, so am over the moon!

Well mine took 4 weeks, Darren, so you might be in for a bit of a wait yet!

I wasn't expecting mine to come up so fast actually.

The g/house isn't really at the right temperature, but I've been covering them with fleece every night (Mr OWG always asks if I've tucked the babies in yet) and taking the fleece off in the morning for them to get what little sun there is.

(I've been in every day, poking at the soil also)

I've not got anything showing in any of my other trays yet (rosemary, beef tomatoes, peppers etc)

I have soaked my peas in warm water overnight, then sown them and the germination has been brilliant with them all, even outside in my homemade cold frame. I am staggering the sowing and so far have got 10 plants that are 2" tall, looking very healthy and next time I'm down the lottie they are going in protected by lemonade bottles

                LTP -

How far apart are you staggering your sowings?? I'm not sure how long to leave between planting the peas so that I get a fairly long lasting crop.

Don't know the 'proper' answer to that, OWG, but I'm putting a short row in every 4 wks - first lot went in first weekend in Feb (don't laugh, you lot, some of them have started to come up!), then up to beginning of July - assuming I don't run out of room on the meantime!

Me personally, I am going to get the next lot going now, so I would say every 4 weeks is about right. No doubt they will all catch up with each other at the first sign of warmer weather.

Hazel I won't laugh - I sowed some in guttering at the start of Feb too and now they're in the ground (covered with fleece during the night) and are about 6" tall! My first babies More guttering hanging in the lean-to, I'm staggering one length a fortnight.
Have to confess I've also got other things on the go - coriander, parsnips, tomatoes, nasturtiums, marigolds, sweet peas, lettuce, potatoes I couldn't wait!

ahem, cough ... mine have been in the ground for ahem cough .... don't know, looked in diary, forgot to note !

bit leggy and straggly but then so would i be if i'd to battle against the elements that we've been having the last couple of days.

got some successionals sown in the g/h ........ but for the life of me can't remember if i should pinch them out or not or is that just sweet peas?

I've got some of supersprout's pea sprouts coming along for salad clippings, sown as sacrificial plants. sacrificial to my tummy !

so ? should i pinch or not pinch, that is the question.

                          Hardy Peas

Last year I bought some pea seeds from a company called 'Simply Vegetables'.

They are a very old variety dating from the 18th Century call 'Half Pint Pea' and they are VERY hardy. Also they are tiny, only growing a few inches high so they dont need sticks or supports and can be grown in pots on the patio. With minimal effort I managed a decent crop of extremely sweet and tasy peas.

I ordered more this year and planted them a week ago on my kitchen window sill. All but 2 germinated and now they are already to plant out in pots.

I definately recommend them to anyone short on space.

My peas (Kelvedon Wonder) have just started to pop up too! very exciting as it is my first year growing veg. They took a while in my unheated greenhouse.
I am planting a row of peas or mangetout roughly every 2 weeks until the end of June to give me a constant supply. Apparently the plants only crop for 2 weeks at a time....anyway you can never have too many peas....right?
