Mine takes about 6 months to a year to rot down. Yours may be too dry, it will rot down dry but it takes much longer.Comment

when you say it 'melts', is the compost disappearing, ie the bin not filling up?
It will naturally drop down a bit as the stuff on the bottom rots, but it ought to get higher up the bin, as you add fresh stuff to the top.
