I think Which magazine missed the point. It's just great fun peeing on a compost heap.

Well I can't say I've done it myself but I'd feel terrible at depriving my wee boy, so perhaps I shall ignore "Which"'s advice too!

Also, there's something rather satisfying about the recycling element in all this

I don't have a wormery but I agree with Zazen - I can just hear the little worms in there going - Bl%dy 'ell, it's pi$$ing rain again!

There was an article in the last Which gardening magazine which claimed to debunk "old wives tales" in gardening. Their conclusion about p'ing on compost heaps was that it's pointless unless you're struggling to get enough fresh, green material in the heap. What they said was:

"Human and animal urine is a source of nitrogen, which speeds up decomposition by boosting the activity of composting organisms.

Micro organisms are the workhorses of your compost heap and in order to function properly they need nutrients including nitrogen. This is found naturally in kitchen waste and green, sappy plant materials, such as grass clippings. If you've got the right balance of nitrogen-rich and carbon-rich materials in your heap, there's little evidence that adding extra nutrients benefits micro organisms and speeds up composting. We trialled compost activators in 2008 and found nitrogen-rich fertiliser didn't speed up composting. Too much nitrogen can, in fact, be detrimental, because it raises salt levels which discourages worms and will turn your heap into a foul smelling mess".

So. That's what Which thinks of it!

Shame, because my 7 year old wee boy was hysterically excited when I once allowed him to wee in a beer bottle before emptying it into the dalek (he can't actually reach the dalek, he's too little) ...

Just wondering if anyone else disputes this? I don't have a clue myself, so I'd be interested to hear other views!

I alternate greens and browns - and when I put a lod of browns in (i.e. cardboard) I'll wee on that. If I don't, it takes ages to heat up (haven't really stired it around) - but if I do, I can feel the heat an hour or so later - it's amazing.

I think they recommend you dilute the urine with water before adding it to compost bins etc. to weaken it. I was reading an article a bit ago & it suggested us girls get a 'she-wee' so that we could join in...don't think I'll bother though!

Aye I do - I tend to wee in a milk bottle - then water up to the top, or if I'm out and about and too muddy to go in, i wee direct then hose pipe in after

Peeing in the composter is fine; but pee in a wormery and we're coming to get ya!

I tend to pee in the watering can and top up with water then just water the plants,I only pee in the compost when I'm starting a new heap/builders bag as an activator,I usually manage to get about a cubic meter together at a time ,it just kick starts the process and its cheaper than garotta

Yes, vein attempt at keeping foxes away (or, you could take it that I can't be bothered to go in the house as I'm that lazy ).
