  • is anybody NOT sowing at the moment?

So far I have resisted the urge to sow anything slightly tender so apart from chillis in the propagator which the packet stated needed to be early and then broad beans, carrots, beetroot, radish and a few early spuds and a drainpipe of peas in the greenhouse all my seeds are still in their packets. I was going to wait till next week at the earliest to start anything else as I don't have room in the garden to waste to possible failure due to weather.

NOW i'm starting to fret, all you guys are busy planting this and pricking out that, even sweetcorn which I wasn't planning on sowing till early may . I'm getting cold sweats.
so has anyone else resisted the urge?

Like you serenity I've sowed very little, even things which can be sown from mid-feb. I admit I have put some toms in but some of the seed was old and I'm planning to pass some plants on. The propagators are now turned off, even the one with the lemongrass in it so things can progress as a more "normal" pace. Generally stuff I've planted is that which can be hardened off slightly earlier. I have no plans to sow sweetcorn etc yet as I haven't yet got my spuds/carrots etc in and the corn will be going where the earlies will have been dug out.

However I'm a little further south so that probably helps with the hardening off etc.

I have a handful of tomato seedlings on the kitchen windowsill and one little pepper. Other than that nothing planted yet though some melons and charlotte potatoes should be planted today - melons should have been planted last month but I haven't been very organised! Other things will have to wait until Easter when OH is taking a few days break and we hope to get the greenhouse up.

        Don't fret!!!
We've only got 8 toms and about 20 chillies germinating- they have just fully opened their cotyledons ( ie- no true leaves yet)
Have taken the top off the propergator and will progress them onto the windowsill over the weekend and will then sow a couple of different varieties of toms into the propergator.
Plenty of time to do the rest. Had too many failures in the past to rush things

Not a sausage - but then planting them would be just daft! I'm away for the next two weekends (any burglars reading this please be aware that I have certain measures in place to ensure a safe house!), so I won't be able to sow anything. I'm hoping to get one of those little 4-tier greenhouse thingies for my patio to get things started.

            Getting very twitchy now.

Hey Wayne! I love your name!!
I haven't sown anything this year yet either. Like Bubblewrap, my veg patch is a bit waterlogged (please! no more rain for a little while, or all my direct-sown seeds are going to rot!!) Last year it wasn't waterlogged and I sowed carrots and parsnips in Feb and they came to nothing, so this year I'm making sure I wait a while. I'm hoping to get some bits underway this weekend or soon after, depending on the weather and the social diary!

Only my broad beans outside. (East Yorks) I've got a short row each of radish, salad bowl lettue and spring onions in the unheated greenhouse. Gound in my veg plot is still cold and very wet. It's not even all dug over yet. I usually get into the swing of things nearer to Easter.

Well, you've all got far more self control than I have!

As this is my first year, though, I can justify my impatience in sowing early in the name of experimentation - and I'll have plenty of time for re sowing if my seeds don't come to anything.

January - sowed B Beans, lettuce and carrot under cover (coldframe)
Feb - sowed peas, bbeans, JA, radish, parsnip, beetroot, potato (rocket) all in variations of 'under cover'

The first of the BB and peas are showing now!

From what I read on the vine, they'll all catch each other up anyway!

new here (usually lurking on RC forums), so guess i best say hello peeps

                    "hello peeps"

we haven't done a thing yet either. Im in the process of moving the patio to make room for a new raised bed and until thats done the entire garden is in turmoil so we cant get started. Im hoping for some slightly warmer and sunnier weather this weekend so i can get on with things. The only beds that are in a useable state are still full of last years leeks, sprouts and PSB.
If i can brew it, ill have a go at growing it.

                      Hello Vyper
nice to meet you and welcome to the vine. We have only got stuff which was planted last Autumn, nothing new yet apart from some banana shallots. Looking forward to the ground warming up and drying out a bit - we are quagmired at the mo so can't do much at all.

I believe today is officially the first day of spring Madderbat, going by astrological calculations - but maybe somebody else can confirm that.

I've only just started sowing, and can't sow any seeds direct into the ground as we're flooded

I've got peas, tomatoes and peppers and strawberries in the (unheated) greenhouse, but that's it.

Would have liked to put some early carrots and spuds in, but they will just float away in the water

                            Hi Alice
I've always taken the vernal equinox (20/21st March) as the going date, but am willing to be advised otherwise by those more knowledgeable.
I do like the Roman version though - 14th February, St Valentines Day was when the birds were supposed to mate up for the season. Seems a lot more optimisitic, but still freezing winter in some areas.

All I have done is planted out shallots and onion sets. It is too wet to doing anything else and as my farmer husband keeps telling me "it is too early"!
