I've got shrews on my plot, they live in tunnels in my raised beds and like nibbling on my beetroots, carrots and parsnips from underground - and there isn't a darn thing I can do about it

Definitely shrews T_S . Actually a Barn Owl isn't a bad idea...can't do anything else coz the little treasures are protected!

That is I think a picture of a vole shrews have pointed snouts. I have had most of my beetroot eaten and put it down to rats judging by the gnaw marks, but on reflection could have been voles as we certainly have plenty around the plot.

rats and mice both love beet as do rabbits

I discovered a giant sunflower head on the ground today, half of it had been eaten (not just the seeds picked out, the whole head eaten).
