Come the more wintery months when things slow down alot how do you keep the motivation going throughout ? May just be me as the plot is fairly new and not been able to do anything major planting wise whilst clearing

No it's not just you, SL. It helps that I have some compost heaps and fruit trees and bushes to visit, but it gets very hard to get the energy to get out and up to the plot to empty the compost bucket and check things over.
I find a thermos of hot chocolate, a few things to burn in my incinerator and a few bags of horse poo picked up and shoved in the boot of my car help to nudge me in the right direction! (If I dally with the latter the car tends to smell like the stables in no time flat).Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

I only go up to drop off composting stuff, and pick a bit of kale or cabbage now - it's too cold and wet to do anything else
I did a big tidy up, turned my compost and spread mulches in OctoberLast edited by Two_Sheds; 20-11-2010, 07:03 PM.All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

Once we'd done the Autumn clear up, we'd just nip down at weekends to pick a few veg ( kale, cabbage, sprouts JA's, parsnips) and maybe light the bonfire if the weather had been dry.Oh- and repair any broken glass in the greenhouse after high winds...and drop off compost and leaves.
Apart from that , we were rarely on the lottie between December and March
...time for planning for the following growing season -and other things none veggie
It's not actually good to walk on the wet soil as it compacts it- so as the saying goes-( something like...)..."if the soil sticks to your spade when you're digging- then you shouldn't be standing on the soil"...unless of course you have pathsLast edited by Nicos; 20-11-2010, 02:59 PM."Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... There every evening after work to sort chooks out! Too dark to do much gardening now but usually devote all day every Sunday to allotment.
Loads to do, not least weeding, mulching, tidying up,repairing stuff (greenhouse needs new wooden roof spars.) after cleaning insulating greenhouse with large bibblewrap, new raised bed to make in greenhouse, pruning, cutting back, sorting compost heaps, making designated cut flower covered area, paths to sort, crops to pick, stuff in greenhouse to tend and prick out, wood to chop for woodburner, hoops to make over beds......and after lunch I'll find something else to do!!!!
Nope, no motivation required, enjoy winter at allotment more than summer!Last edited by Snadger; 20-11-2010, 06:17 PM.My Majesty made for him a garden anew in order
