I sowed my onions ('Ailsa Craig') on Monday, in home-made seed medium*, in two trays, in a heated propagator. I made the medium from half-and-half leafmould and garden compost, both sieved (although the result was still pretty rough-textured). I consulted my books on compost for recipes, and that was the simplest, so I went for it. Comments from experienced makers of their own growing media welcomed. One seedling has appeared, but I think it's a weed, not an onion, although it does appear to be a monocot. At any rate, it shows that seedlings will germinate in the mix!
*I don't like the terms "seed compost" or "potting compost", because they invite confusion with garden compost, therefore "seed medium". Also "potting medium" and "growing media".
I've started my tomatoes today, in unheated propagators but indoors until the greenhouse heaters arrive and are installed.
8 each of Gardener's Delight, Ildi, Marmande and Roma (not all for me), 4 of Silvery Fir Tree (which I'm parraine for) 2 each of Maritime Pink, Calabash Red, miel de Mexique, Ananas Vert, Ferris Wheel, Orange Queen, Dorothy Green (all Kokopelli) and 2 HSL Essex Wonder which somebody sent me privately.
Getting started, tomorrow it's the peppers, chillis and aubergines
In the as yet unheated greenhouse but inside the mini greenhouse:
50 x feve, d'Aquadulche Supersimonina
50 x haricot mangetout nain, Reine des pourpres
Then the following, which are indoors waiting for the heaters to arrive:
4 x poivron, Choco
4 x aubergine, blanche ronde a oeuf
4 x piment peu fort, San Juan tsize (Kokopelli, one of my guardian seeds, more to be sown later)
Yesterday I sowed a half tray of early Cauliflowers, 6 Jimmy Nardello peppers, 8 (sweet) orange baby peppers ,6 Mohawk sweet peppers and 7 Cayenne peppers in one of my shiny new heated propagators.
Today I added A little pot of Razzamatazz Chilli Peppers \o/
6 x mini bell peppers
6 x razzamatazz chillis
in an unheated propagator in the cosy living room
Also sowed some parsley seeds and popped these in an unheated propagator on the new shelf that my lovely boyfriend built to go above the kitchen windowsill to increase space!!
Managed to sow some shallot and onion seed yesterday. I never do very well with seed of either but one year I hope to crack the secret. Also sowed some red cabbage seed as it needs a fairly long growing season.
