  • Sedge Peat

Afternoon All and Happy New Year Grapes. This is my first trawl through the Vine since returning from a relaxing Post Christmas and New Year in Devon.

Through tired, bleary eyes on Sunday morning I managed to pick up the wrong item at my LGC. Instead of 25kg of horticultural sand I picked up 75ltrs sedge peat!! Easy mistake to make!!!!

What are the benefits/drawbacks of Sedge Peat? I have had a quick search through the archives and cannot find very much mention of it. I was just going to dig it in and improve my soil??

    Any advice?

As peat is not a renewable resource (in the short term) I would try to make better use of your mistake. Sieve it into MPC at a 30/70 ratio and use as seed compost . It will eventually get into your plot but you will have got more out of it. Just a suggestion.

      I looked this up:

Reed-sedge peat is made from the slightly decomposed leaves of sedge plants... that grow in marshes

Reed-sedge peat is similar to leaf mulch and because it is less acidic than peat, it should not be used on plants that thrive in acidic soil, such as azaleas, rhododendrons, tomatoes, hibiscus and blueberries.

Like traditional sphagnum-based peat moss, reed-sedge peat should not be used as a mulch, as when it dries it can create a water-repelling shield over the soil.

Mixed with sand it is a good top dressing for lawns, loosens heavy soils and improves moisture retention.again just a suggestion.

          Should have gone to Specsavers.

Sorry, I'm beginning to think I watch too much telly at this time of year.
