Fish BLood and bones

I know i can easily get regular amount of fish blood and bone but can i take this straight from the fishmonger and mix it with the soil now, which has already been manured and covered and waiting for planting in the spring, or should i wait until things are in the ground first? will it lose it effectiveness if its not fresh or is it better when left for a while?

I've always bought my fbb from the garden shop. Never seen it in a fishmonger.
It is usually really dry and you just sprinkle it round where needed. It takes a few weeks to become soluble enough for the plants to use.

Normally raked into the soil at planting time as it has quick and slow release fertiliser elements. It was the organic pre-cursor to the inorganic National Growmore giving a balanced feed.
You need to get the bonemeal from a reputable source as it is sterilised against anthrax which is carried in the bones of animals.

The dried blood on the soil surface can sometimes attract rats.

Minty, are you talking about fish waste from the fishmonger? ie, blood, guts, skin and bone.

If so I would be very wary of using it on the garden in an uncomposted state as it will attract all manner of vermin and stink something awful

If you mean sterilized BFB fertilizer then do as Snadger suggests.

I think you may be confused, it's not fishblood and fish bone but fish, blood and bone. Three seperate things, combined in their dried form to create a fertiliser.

Don't use fresh - I have a feeling you'll be fighting off rats and foxes and Lord know what else.
