hi, when do i need to start my sweet potatoes to get slips on them. any advice would be great, i havent done this before so any advice is welcome. thanks

They need to be warm - sweet potatoes crop best at temperatures between 21-26°C.
I don't know where you are? Here on the east coast we get 21c for maybe 4 days in an average year, so I'd have to grow them in a greenhouse.
They're tender plants, so I'd not start chitting them until 2 or 3 weeks before my last frost date (usually end April).

My mum grew them in a potato sack on her patio last year, which gets a lot of sun. She had a respectable crop of 6inch-ish potatoes. Going to try this method again in 2011.
