Agreed on all counts It is attractive, glossy dark leaves and quite majestic in full growth. In fact, I'm going to split some off and spread it around a bit

So I could have grown loads last season before my drainage problem was fixed?

Damn - wish I had known. I might not have had so many jibes about rice and watercress on my soggy plot

i'm doing the herb beds, blimy how much mint, sage and thyme can one family eat! The previous owners must have been selling it by the barrowload. Anyway, I digress.
In amongst the herbs I have found either celery or celeriac, the leaves look like celery, it smells like celery when you crush the leaves so what is it?

Is it Lovage? Mine has really dark leaves, glossy, about 1' high, at the moment.

I sowed lovage last year and it didn't do well at all. Out in the garden last Saturday I pulled up a massive root along with what I thought was a weed... turned out the lovage is growing without any input from me and I actually thought it had died last year.. That's the kind of plant I like

A piece has been moved to another bit of the garden because I have sown borage in the original spot. I haven't any celery in this year as I neglected it and didn't use even half a plant.
When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it.
If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant.

                      Thanks Chicken.
I think it must be Lovage. Now I will have to have a look how to eat it. Can you eat it just like Celery, raw with salt on or is it for using in soups and stews and as a garnish.
It smells lovely. I want to eat it now with a piece of cheese and an apple.... Ohhhh that's got my tummy rumbling!
Thanks for going to all that trouble Chick, your a star x
