I'm lucky in that I have a friendly farmer who donates me 2 big digger buckets of cow muck and straw every year, but I wouldnt buy topsoil even if I didnt.
My soil is very heavy clay, horrible really, and over the last 6 years I have built raised beds, and slowly filled them up with whatever I had available compost wise.
They are now pretty much full (about 10" deep I reckon) but I have definitely noticed that as the years go by, the bed gains about half an inch in depth due to digging over the good stuff into the bed.

I've been busy harassing people at work today for their rubbish, they think I am slightly batty collecting their teabags and bannana skins.
But I've found out a collegue's neighbour owns a horse and anothers daughter rides so will be off collecting manure at the weekend, luckily we are moving towards being an eco school so people are pretty on board with what I am doing and most people don't have gardens or compost bins so my wombling should pay off!

I'll let you know how I get on, I am very excited to get going :-)

Do you go through the bins like I do ?

I nearly fished a banana skin out today but there were people about and they would have tormented the life out of me! I seemed to have nagged/trained everyone to put their teabags in a pot for me, will work on fruit next.
Got to work today to see 2 bags of kitchen scraps on my desk (dropped off yesterday when I was out) and my office now stinks of onions and cabbage :-s

My man have scavenged loads of cardboard from work and is saving coffee ground from the office machine :-)

Can't wait to get it all in!
