I wouldn't use hay, too much by way of grass seed in that.

Dig over the plot around 4 weeks before planting or sowing seeds, then this allows the weeds to germinate, so that they can be hoe'd off before the bed gets used, it worked fairly well last year and hopefully will do the same this year.

I think with annual type weeds just hoeing them off when they're small is best , you just have to be careful to sow your veg. seeds in a recognisable line so you don't hoe them off too! For tougher weeds I just try & pull them up as soon as I can grab them, dandelions are a bit of a pain as they nearly always leave some root but you can add the leaves to salad.
Into every life a little rain must fall.

Thanks everyone for great tips and comments. I've definitely got to get out there with my hoe. Haven't had a chance recently so need to go and tend to my little patch asap!

I love this idea. Whereabouts in Manchester are you? If your tortoise ever fancies a treat you're welcome to bring it round to feast on my weeds.

I find that using weed suppressant fabric gives shelter to slugs at least weeds kept under control don't eat your crop.

I have difficulty with my knees and back, so getting up close is not really an option, so its a hoe for me. I also bought a gas powered flame thrower thingy from wilkos, and it seems to work quite well.
