  • Germination

    Spinach
    Lettuce
    Broadies
    Cornflowers

Have all germinated in an unheated greenhouse over the past 3 weeks.

I was beginning to get worried there!

The peas have rotted, so I'm tipping the compost out, picking out the manky bits and will resow - particularly as it is actually quite warm in there today.

Has anyone else got stuff sown since the New Year outdoors that is starting to grow?

All I've actually started in the unheated greenhouse, is my exhibition shallots in trays of compost. They have thrown roots and the green shoots are now starting to show. In the sunshine, which there hasn't been much of, the temperature has been up as far as seventy celcius - which is not cold. The heated propogator for seed germination at this time of year is definitely the road to go.

Crimson broad beans are just starting to push there way through. I'm surprised all 2 dozen have survived really because we had another freeze the other night.

I haven't been able to try anything outside yet, especially since the blowaways blew away. I'm kind of glad I resisted the temptation to get some more last week, the felt on the shed roof blew off overnight, so they would definitely have gone the same way! I have got caulis and peas on the windowsills that are about an inch high. Hoping to start some more off this weekend.

That's the equivalent of using a heated propogator so we're in the same boat

I just have some broad beans on the go so far, four different varieties (a crimson one, sutton, another one called green something and some aquadulce outside. All are showing signs of life.

I also have some nasturtiums and weeds growing under lights for the tortoise for next month.

My hardy stuff is in the conservatory which is frost free and that's about it, greenhouse is a might bit chilly at the moment and involves having to go outside to check on stuff which isn't great on dark nights. Mind you the broadies, peas, onions, caulis and cabbages have all now started germinating so they'll be out there soon

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I started some broad beans today and they are on the windowsill.
I thought I might have been a bit early but it appears from this thread that I am not :-)

I had one of my greenhouse panes blow out last night too.
Woke up to find that the wife had rescued it (it's perspex), so I stuck it back together and need to brace it in the middle until I get some new glass on Monday.
Never heard of this happening before.
Needed to do a quick fix so my Garlic, Onions and leeks didn't get blown away.

I tend to start stuff inside then put out as soon as it's showing. Got lettuce in modules, leeks and onions. Broadies I pre-chitted a few weeks back and I think one is starting to poke through. Haven't started any brassicas, peas or hardy flowers yet... must get a move on.

Nothing been planted outside in the way of seeds, ground still far to cold. Have some broad beans to go out this week under a large cloche. Autumn garlic and onions outside doing well and more garlic to go out this week (in pots at moment).
