I can't remember where i got it from but it was nothing special- as in i didn't hunt out a particular type and just bought the cheapest pack!
I was going to suggest that it may have helped that my pumpkin grew quite far away from the main roots where i watered but as you say if it was from rainwater then thats irrelevant. I'm sure a plastic tray would be most effective as no water would go through it and you could tip water off

I have a few 'breeds' of squash I would like to try this year as we now have a lottie! (yes I will stop bashing on about it one day)
How much space would you give each plant?Little ol' me
Has just bagged a Lottie!
Oh and the chickens are taking over my garden!

I plant my squash in the middle of the wigwam that the beans go up. When the beans are small the squash get plenty of sun then as the beans grow the squash grow along the side of them. The water, I pour into a large bottle by the side of the plant buried deep in the soil so all the soil is damp right deep down at the roots. The squash also benefit from the compost trench I put in for the beans. It works ok for me
