Fridging Garlic in toilet rolls ?

Hello folks

I planted 15 cloves of garlic in toilets rolls a couple of weeks ago. I put them outside in the hope that they would get the cold spell needed to ensure bulb formation ( gosh I sound like I know what i'm talking about, be assured I don't lol ).

The things is I have just planted another 15 cloves and read somewhere on here that putting them in the fridge for a fortnight would help decieve them that they'd been planted in the winter. My question is at what point do I put them in the fridge, when they have sprouted or as soon as I plant them ? not sure whether they need light to germinate

Well, I think ideally they need about a month of cold weather but I have no idea if putting them in the fridge works. If you want to try it, I would put them in the fridge for a bit then plant out. They'll need more space than loo rolls though - or are you planning on putting them in the ground later
Personally, if you've already stuck 15 in the ground I think you should leave them to get on with it. I planted some in Feb, season before last and they did ok. Not as big as the autumn planted ones but they were a decent size and had split into cloves.

Hi Shadylane, sorry I've not explained myself very well. I planted the first lot in toilet rolls too. I'm still digging the new allotment, then I have to erect the raised beds and it won't be ready for planting until mid march so thought I would try to get a head start. The toilet rolls will be planted out then.

No need to chill after planting them; just pop a whole bulb of garlic in the salad box of a fridge for 3 or 4 weeks and then break into cloves and plant up.

Alternatively, some people give them a very short time in the freezer.

Yep.. thats what i did, but i then planted the cloves in a container filled with old (steamed serilised) compost in the colder greenhouse just before we had all that frost and snow last November/December. They seem all to have taken well and are about 2 inch high now. Will plant half out and leave the rest insitu to compare growth and quality.

Ah right, got y. They'll have some nice root growth by then I expect.
