Sorry everyone but I agree with AP. I have tried peat free several times but find it no subsitute for peat based compost.

And again I agree with the statment about hype. As with many other subjects globaaaaall warming etc the effect of responsibly havested peat bogs is well over stated

Thanks potstubsetc. I was getting a pasting there but determined to stand my ground. Holly has unleashed a real controversial subject with this one.

I typed and deleted a post supporting your (and my) use of peat but deleted it as I had put too much passion into my case against banning peat (and thin-plastic supermarket bags).

What happened to tolerance in this world ? Why do the "goody-goodies" demand to impose their views on everyone else's life ?

If they reduce their usage then there will be plenty left for those of us who want to use it.

...and that's before I get onto the hype of climate change on peat.

Whoa , whoa, peat is one thing, supermarket carriers is a different ball game. There is a real alternative to them and I do support the drive to reduce the use of them. I do miss them at home for putting rubbish out in though.

Im not getting at you for using peat for competition spuds as i realise that the best results are obtained using peat. But when nobody can use peat it will not be an issue

I don't think my neck is the subject of the debate, and if it is, it shouldn't be.

I must say its refreshing to see a comment like this I must also say that if I ever get the chance I will always choose a peat based compost too I have just about had it upto my back teeth all this PC stuff most of it is put around just to make rich companies even richer
And lets not forget if we are talking about saving the Planets stocks, just look at the fishermen /women / persons (Lol) If they are out at sea and are meant to be catching say haddock for instance and they catch anything other than Haddock in there trawl nets they have to throw it away back into the sea most of which by then is already dead (Whats all that about?) Look what a pointless exercise thats is !!!

As a newbie grower I have no experience of using peat free compost. I like to buy the best quality products I can afford so what is best for me?

If two sheds says that there is a good non peat based alternative then there is a good non peat based alternative.

I will try this when I see it and maybe try to compare it for myself against a John inns or similar.

I've tried cheap compost from Aldi but I doubt it had peat......it was very hard to break up with big twiggy bits in...I ended up mixing it with severalcothers to get a balance.

                    Interesting thread........

                          Precisely!!!

If the non-peat alternative really didn't grow things, they wouldn't last long would they?

Another peat free person here - whenever I can find the alternative.
I am happy to own up to being one of the 'save the planet types'.
And if things don't grow well for me, I tend to blame my own incompetence, not the compost!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Reading back through this thread a thought has occurred to me........If it so much easier to grow fantastic veg using peat then surely it is a test of your prowess to grow fantastic veg using non-peat based compost.......
