re two sheds
you are not using enough of my words in my posts to make a valid argument only making it easy for you to comment against by using so few or only pieces of the phrases I wrote and so its not proper of me to try and answer you because its now out of context
but I will say this
its well documented that peat based products give better results than none peat ones and
if everyone used their own home made stuff the need for production of any kind of compost would be greatly diminished and this topic on here would of ended long since
I would think the average household woudn't be able to make enough compost for veg growing so there would still be a market.
So, say we all go peat free, where does the extra compost come from? Our council will only take card and garden waste for composting - if people were allowed to put veg waste in aswell the amount would increase dramatically.
Also what about other food waste? Maybe they can come up with some way to compost all the food waste from restaurants, cafes etc without creating a pest problem. What about pet corpses? Maybe they could offer an alternative to cremation and while they're at it, why stop at pets?
The possiblitities are endless.
Personally i wouldn't dream of telling anyone what to buy, that's their business, but for me personally, if I can obtain a renewable form of compost, reasonably priced, that performs as well or close to that of peat, then it's a no brainer really
its well documented that peat based products give better results than none [sic] peat ones
Is it? I'd be interested to see those documents/articles, really I would.
I always believed peat to be superior, because that is what "everyone" says. So, I did my own trials, and guess what? The peat free was better than the peat-based
I will concede that it is still too expensive, compared to peat. If the playing field re: cost was levelled, more people would use the best peat free (New Horizon)
All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.
In contrast, no peat-containing compost met Best Buy standards"
Without knowing what the Best Buy Standards applied by Which were, it is impossible to comment on the awards that they made. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for and if it suits your purpose you use it and continue to use it, and you don't buy what doesn't work for you. It is a matter of choice and I choose to use composts containing peat because they work for me and the more peat contained, the better they work for me, that is a fact, tried and tested by me. As I said in an earlier post, I make no apologies for that nor should I have to.

Reason: fixing quote
Ok AP you tell us that you can grow good veg using peat and that you find it easy........ so now prove how good you really are and rise to the challenge of growing with peat free........

its also obvious to me that to continue with the arguing the point is pretty futile the Mods have decided that they are correct on this matter ,
Excuse me? This thread was started by the magazine to collect views on using peat or peat free compost. All the mods have done is to request that people stick to the point and do not make this rather contentious topic personal.
I'm competing in an arena where all the growers are using the very best growing mediums(media) and to be able to compete with them on a level playing field, I need to do so also. Growing for exhibition is a very expensive hobby and the objective is too win. I cannot do that with my hands tied behind my back and I can't do it using inferior products. The issue Holly asked us to consider is the merits of the product which I have done.
The only way for you to challenge my argument is not to ask me to grow using your medium of choice but for you to do so and get your results on the showbench and prove your point that way.
The Norfolk Broads were created out of peat beds. The peat has never been "renewed" but with careful management the Broads are now teeming with wildlife
From what I’ve read, it suggests the waterways of the Broads are as they are today from some act of nature following the flooding of the trenches the peat was being extracted from. I wonder if harvesting would have ceased on the scale it did, when it did if they had not flooded. Though I’d imagine the arrival of easy coal and industrialisation would have slowed the extraction level eventually.
I like the idea of a trial and I am sure that the outcome would be that you could cope with the stuff but now my worry is this :-
If we all stop using the peat based products and go in for for the say UK 100 % recycled stuff how long before we run out of this natural recycled material ??? and what happens then ? Answer it brought into the Country from Abroad making this whole Issue an even bigger one, because of the amount of energy that is getting used for this product to be made and then shipped making it even harder for our own Countries Economy and making it better for other Countries Because lets face it our Lords Ladies and all the Policy makers and holders will no doubt make it easy for outside influences to benefit whilst making sure that we folk here on this fair Isle will have to be well British for want of another word, yes its a cynical and witty Retort but it has some pretty sinister messages within it. So I just wanted others to take these points onboard as well
Just to look at this in another light, if everyone started to use peat free compost in these islands and all of the available green/brown waste was being composted into a good quality product here, ( I would guess the amount of foodstuff and garden waste properly treated would keep us in peat free anyway) then why not offer to dispose of other countries green/brown waste for a charge of course and use any imported waste to make even more compost - this operation would of course be more effective if it were set up in their own country and the resulting compost sold back to them. Just more of a glass half full way of looking at it. As for the ruling hereditary elite, I’ve always been of the opinion that they’d make some mighty fine, peat free compost given the chance
Hello....
Wow, there are defintely some strong opinions on this thread, which is great to see. It's so important to debate these issues and work out where we stand on it.
However, let's stick to peat and try to keep as calm as possible, please! I know it's a heated area but everyone is entitled to an opinion - it's extremely interesting to see how attitudes divide on this particular issue... so let's stick to it!

I think Holly would like to know if anyone would like one of these

I am not bothered about having the biggest or best....as long as it tastes good . Surely as was suggested earlier a trial between both mediums wouldn't hurt after all not all your veg is for the showbench I'm guessing you do actually eat some of it too.

yes it started to seem to me the mods had only issued any moderating onto people who are pro peat users, those not pro peat users that had strayed form the exact subject matter seemingly have slipped under the mod radar unless its just a weired coincidence that they are posting moderating comments when a pro user had just posted The Mods no doubt are going to reply its a coincidence which can leave me with a sense of theirs a lots of strong farmyard smells around here
