I use 'Fertile Fibre' Seed and Multi-purpose - yes, it's a bit more expensive but I've had brilliant results and my local GCs don't stock the New Horizon (yes, really).

I use whatever compost I can get cheaply, when I can get it. I prefer grow-bags as the contents are usually finer that the expensive so-called super-duper compost that I bought last year - it was full of twigs, plastic cable covering and all sorts of rubbish...

The March edition of Which Gardening magazine has a survey pitting all the major brands against each other on cost and effectiveness, both peat and peat free. New Horizon wins. There is just no need to use peat, Kew don't, Monty Don doesn't, Geoff Hamilton didn't. Those guys know what they're talking about.

No, as long as you can hold of it. I haven't seen New Horizon in any of our local GCs. The nearest one that stocks it is a at least a good 1/2 hr drive away. I managed to find some Yorkshire Horticultural Supllies peat free but as it's a Yorkshire company I don't think they supply all over. The GCs really need to make it easier for people to go peat free and if New Horizon keeps beating the competitors then more need to stock it and at a reasonable price

I raised your points with the parent company (Sinclair) and their answers were woolly and vague to say the least.

They said they couldn't control who stocked it and what price the retailer charges.
I got the impression they weren't that bothered, (and they still seem to make profit from their peat range) ...

Like Twosheds I grow everything, seeds, young plants onwards in peat free without any problems. Some of it is really rubbish but the New Horizon stuff is brilliant, no big twiggy bits but just a lovely compost which can be use straight away with no waste etc. I usually get it in a local garden centre but sometimes it's iin B&Q on special.

Did they mention that they sell peat free at a higher price to the retailer in the first place, with a higher RRP?

Sinclairs can sell peat based at a lower price because they sell so damned much of it. The retailer often then passes this discount on to customers, 3 for a tenner etc. The price of peat free wont come down much until there is a much higher demand for it and it can be sold in larger volume.

Yes they did. I wanted them to explain exactly why peat free is 3 times the price of peat, but they dodged the question, imo

New Horizon peat-free 50lt is on a '3 for 2' offer - printed on the bags - try your your local garden centre...
