White mould chitting broad beans

I have tried to chit broad beans between several sheets of damp kitchen paper.

The dreaded white mould has started to appear before the lovely Green shoots!

Are the affected beans now useless and should I move the unaffected ones somewhere else quickly?

No need to chit Broadies.... i have about 100 in loo rolls growing nicely in a blow-away. Usually sow straight in the ground in the Autumn but have lost too many in the past to the snowy winters we have had just lately.

I'd do without the paper. Just soak the beans overnight, then rinse daily in clean water until they sprout

Don't bother chitting - germination pretty much guaranteed on broad beans.
I put mine in rootrainers and pop them on the windowsill, then once through, move them to greenhouse.
Planted all mine today and cloched against the mice and forthcoming frosts.

I will try the root trainer method too with the second half of my seeds.......love broad beans......thanks

Either they are too wet, or there is mould coming from somewhere (perhaps on the beans themselves).

Using water containing a fungicide, rather than "plain water", will help. Choose one suitable for seedlings (Chesunt Compound used to be the one, but that's now banned - although you can still use up any you have left, this year I think)

Use Tap Water and not Rain Water for seedlings

... but I prefer the sound of Two Sheds method

Success! Rinsed them off and put them in a plastic lidded pot overnight. Rinsed them this morning and tonight 50% had sprouted. They are now in root trainers and will go in the blow away one erected tomorrow!

I am thinking of planting the other half....about 20 direct at the lot tie.....

Get them straight in the ground, they aren't bothered about the cold like runners are
