Onion sets

Hello everyone!

Today my seed potatoes and onion sets arrived! I know about chitting potatoes, but what do I do with my onion sets for the moment? The plots not ready for planting (and it's probably too soon for the onions to go out yet anyway?).

Should I plant them in pots/trays for the moment? I have both white and red onion sets.

Mine are in modules in the gh and are going great guns

With your onion sets (both red and white), you could do what CtC has done and plant them in modules as this will give them a head start and also let you feel as if you are doing something productive with them. I have about 100 in pots in my greenhouse at the moment and about the same still to be potted up.
If however you are short of space etc and this is not an option, just remove them from their net bag, and spread them out somewhere cool and light, removing any that are showing signs of mould, or that are soft. If you leave them in the bag, these problems are increased and you may end up losing a lot more sets.

I planted mine in modules on the 20th Feb and have already had to sort them out today as their roots were sprouting out from the drainage holes. They now live in 9cm pots right near the top

There is no way I'd have enough space to pot up my onion sets, I do that with my shallots but I don't grow as many of those. I just store mine in the garage which is cold but frost free and never have any problems with them. Tend to check on them about once a week until I plant out but that's about it, just make sure they can get some air to them and they're nice and dry.

Putting mine in modules tomorrow. I've only a few this year, I was disappointed with the size last year, so not doing nearly as many.

Sown some in modules, others going straight in. I too was disappointed with lack of size last year so am going for manure this year!

I don't have much room so shall plant some in modules and keep them in the mini greenhouse I have, and the rest in a box in a frost free place - could I put them on the kitchen shelves along with my chitting potatoes?
