  • cordon toms in pots

How big do you guys think is good for cordon toms in pots? Last summer I had them in absolutely massive pots, and now looking/reading up again, they seem way too big. I only have a small space so would like to know about the smallest pot they are happy to grow in.

I had pots that took 50L compost (MASSIVE! No idea on measurement but a good 2 foot wide maybe, I'll look tomorrow) and had one plant in each - they were absolutely massive mind, one plant in the corner next to 2 walls was nice, warm and sunny and grew to over 2M high, I was going to let it keep going but decided to cut it down instead and actually get some toms off it

I grew some cherry tomatoes in 12" pots last year, one plant per pot, they grew great. I didnt let them get too tall probably about 1.5 metres and got loads of tomatoes off them.

I grow one per Morrison's bucket, it's just the right size

I think the depth is possibly more important than the width. As mentioned, the flower buckets are ideal.

I've often grown some in 10" pots which are probably about a foot deep, do absolutley fine although not as well as the ones in the border.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Definitely Morrisons bucket sized is ideal.

How big is a Morrisons bucket exactly and how many liters do they hold?

I;ve seen them, the 8 for a quid (or whatever they are - mega cheap either way!) ones? I have some similar sized ones (bucket, deep, about a foot wide).

That significantly reduces wasted space on huge pots, I can squeeze yet more stuff into the garden now! Also bought some hanging baskets for trailing toms, roll on the homemade pasta sauce!

I've grown them in flower buckets for the last couple of years but you do need to feed them properly if you want a decent crop. There's*a lot less compost in a flower tub than a two foot wide pot!

                        Buzzing,
Use the morrisons pots but don't forget to make a hole in the bottom for drainage.

As some one else as pointed out you have to take care with watering and feeding.

Last year I used growbags split across the middle to make two pots (with holes in the bottom for drainage)......toms grew fine, it saved filling pots and the grow bags can now be transported to the lottie for the compost to be used for something else........

another user of Morrisons pots here, but last year I grew tumbling toms in a 14" hanging basket, 2 per basket, and they cropped really well

Last year I put one plant in each of my three 45cm pots and there was more than enough space and compost for them. This year I'm changing tactic and puting one plant of each variety in my three 30cm pots in the blowaway and two of each in the patio 45cm pots which are against a white warm sunny wall.

The two in the large pots will be one early and one a bit later, I'm thinking if there's not enough room I'll take out the weekest, probably the latter and I should still get a good crop, fingers crossed.
