Tomato Advice required

Having over run by tasteless tomato types last years .. I want to limit the number of tomato plants this year and for this reason I want only good and tasty types of tomato that are great for salads..

Can someone advise please some good varieties to try

You are going to get a lot of different opinions on this! Sungold are usually highly rated for taste but so are a hundred others. I'm trying Maskotka this year as they have been highly spoken of.

It's not just the variety that matters either, overwatering can make them very tasteless too. I find the nicest ones tend to be the ones grown in the polytunnel border as they get access to a bigger reservoir of food / water and I can be a bit hit and miss with my watering of pots sometimes

more about personal preference this one, you could argue taste until the cows come home!

Some are sweet, some are sour, some are inbetween!

Personally my favourites are black cherry and Ildi (they have both produced bumper crops for me and taste great!). Although like Alison said, I have used the same seed for 2 years on the trot and got very different tasting toms! So watering and weather play a huge part.

IMHO Sungold are a no-brainer to grow, others are liked by some or few or many...

I'd give a thumbs up to Gardeners Delight, Ildi & Black cherry as small/cherry types good in salads.

Red Alert for me, great tasting,good cropper,bush type so no need to support and they crop before the dreaded blight...

I've got two different types of tomatoes, Gardener's Delight (free off of the mag) and Roma - got NO idea what they'll be like but will give them both a shot.

It depends on whether you are talking GH tom or outdoor tom. I like Shirley for greenhouse and Gardeners Delight for outdoor.

I like cherry/tumbler types as they're sweet & great in salads, Gardener's Delight, Tumbling Tom, Red Cherry etc.

Sungold, Black Cherry and Red Alert do it for me. They are really good producers and have a great flavour.

I'd echo what bramble suggested. They're all great tomatoes.
