She doesn't - but I spent 14 years sieving soil before testing it for work...so it's ingrained in me now....

I have some seed compost and its quite lumpy, have done the crumbling technique as it wouldn't pass through a sieve if I tried (was quite damp even in the bag). Hopefully the seeds will be OK - I have bought a tray of compost into my warm bedroom to dry out so I can sieve it over my strawberry seeds next week as they are very small...

I've got a bigger garden sieve but its designed for siving out stones and twigs etc. Hopefully the seeds will be OK - it is all an experiment

If you can "force" it through the sieve - like you would do with the back of a spoon on lumps in flour - then it will be fine. Its probably just got a bit compacted. Its the twigs, stones and other crud that it is worth getting out.

Or your's may be rubbish quality?

I think it was Zaz who put me onto this & must say it is money well spent.

Never sieved any bought stuff although do crumble between my fingers and pick out any twiggy bits - note I use MPC for everything. Do riddle my compost though and have a very good device which you turn the handle on and force it through. Makes it much quicker to get through the whole compost heap and chuck the big bits back in for the next sieve.

I was wondering if I could get one locally?

I'd probably sieve the homemade compost we're working on when it's ready, simply because huge lumps would be a pain. Otherwise it's just a crumble in the fingers job for shop-bought multipurpose stuff.

I sieve the homemade compost through a plastic soil sieve - just to get the twiggy bits out and to find the bits of plastic/rubbish that seem to find their way in there. I find it quite therapeutic on a warm day.

I've seen them in a decent garden centre but mine was much cheaper on line.

I got mine on an amazon offer - but they sell them at machine mart if you have one close by.
