What do you use to tell you the days VVG? I mostly use this website Guide to planting by the moon - The Gardeners Calendar but also have The Biodynamic Sowing and Planting Calendar by Maria & Matthias Thun but I find the book a little confussing as I have never had time to sit down and read it, I just flip through and see what today/tomorrow/my next day off is
The Gardeners Calendar is one I tend to refer to mostly but there are other sites I tap into. I too am a bio in training. Not well versed at all but am loving the results it is giving me so far.

hmmmph! I hate reading about new stuff. The first two methods of moon planting contradict each other! (synodic and biodynamic)
They are two different cycles. It depends on which you follow. One is based on the waxing and waning of the moon and is a much simpler version of lunar planting to get your head around; the other the moon's path through Air, Water, Fire and Earth signs where you double your effects as the moon and cosmos work together.
It's whether you believe....you don't have to follow it.

I've never tried lunar planting but it does sound very interesting and ive been thinking of having a go, unfortunatley for me i sowed beetroot and radish yesterday which i read on someone elses post i shouldnt of done if i wanted to have a go at lunar planting! maybe this is the perfect time to set a trial......

Absolutely and if you have more radish and beetroot they are good to get sown 20th/21st. That is if you plant biodynamically.
As an aside the next full moon is 19th so get sowing now on non roots for good germination on that day!
Good luck!

Great idea for a thread, I got my plot last year so this is my first full year. So far I have planted/sown by moon dates eg fruit, flower, root, leaf. I have not done any control sowing. So far my germinations have been great and everything is florishing. today I have sown leaf seeds like cabbage and lettuce, more tomorrow then onto fruits (peas, beans etc ) on thursday. My seed potatoes will go in Sunday/Monday or the next root day

Sounds like my week although going for 26th March for my potatoes as moon in 3rd quarter. Fruit on Friday 18th/Saturday 19th.

Does the moon being in it's third quarter make a differance to roots? As I have nothing more to sow tonight I'm going to try reading some of my moon planting book, this thread has got me wanting to find out more

Optimum time for roots so gives me time to get the bed ready too. After Full moon towards New/Dark moon is the waning period as the roots search deeper for water. Bringing in biodynamics we look for the moon travelling through an Earth sign too. Hope this explains although I am still learning - I am sure there are others who know more...

For those interested, tomorrow's schedule goes like this.
Biodynamic: Sow Leaf plants like Cabbages, Celeriac, Celery, Dill, Lettuce, Rhubarb, Spinach, but it would not be a good time to sow Fruiting plants like Aubergines (Eggplant), Broad Beans (Fava), Cucumbers, Peas, Peppers, Tomatoes.
Synodic: Sow vegetables that produce internal seed bearing fruits. Tomatoes, beans, peas, peppers, chillis, pumpkins, courgettes.
So it's Celeriac, Dill and Lettuce for me!

Do you want just straight lunar planting, ie. waxing/waning or moon through the four elements of air, earth, fire and water? Synodic or biodynamic?
If easy lunar planting then plant your tomatoes any time up to the 19th when the moon is waxing but not on the 19th, which is full moon. If you want to follow biodynamic then next date is the 19th.
Does that answer your query?

Sadly I only get to garden at the weekends, so it is probably a bit limiting... Thanks however for the info and links - will investigate further!
Any other useful links appreciated
thanks

I have been using the book "in Tune with the Moon" byMichel Gros. Lots of interesting info on other subjects eg Hairdressing. My hair grows very quickly and needs cutting by 5-6 weeks so last got it cut on a day that would slow down hair growth-that was 8 weeks ago and I'm still not planning a visit to my hairdresser. Think of the savings.
The book has a small diary section that lets you see at a glance whether moon ascending or descending, which group is used on particular day, phase of moon, and when not to plant as nothing takes. Trying to keep the diary up to date.
