has anyone planted out their onion and shallot sets yet?

Normally I'd have them in the ground by now, but it's been so cold and damp. I've got this Friday off work and was planning to put them in then, but don't want them to suffer if it's still too cold - I put them in a bit too early last year and they never really recovered.

I'm in London btw.

I put half of mine in before xmas, will do the other half this week I think, if not next week.

Mine went in yesterday, but I'm only growing a few red this year. I took up a lot of ground last year and was disappointed with the yield and the quality.

Mine havent arrived yet! Probably a good thing as its still a bit frosty really. Might put them out the end of the month.

Mine are in modules in the gh, they would need thermals and water wings if I was to put them out just now

I saw them do modules on gardener's world and am considering doing that when they arrive too. I dont know why its not a general practice. Do they transplant ok??

I've done them that way for years....no probs at all with transplanting!
( I didn't see the programme- was he planting them individually or in seed trays???)
I do mine a couple of inches apart in seed trays and you just need to gently shake them to separate the roots when you're ready to transplant.

They transplant absolutely fine but if you grow enough to see you through the winter then it's a lot of hard work to module them all so there's no way I'd consider it although I do start off my shallots that way - grow far less of them. My red onion sets haven't arrived yet but round here it's too early anyway, normally put them in late March at the earliest although I do have the overwintering ones in from last October.

put mine in on Tuesday. any sign of frost and i'll put the fleece on them. got some good top growth already

74 x Red Baron, 74 x Hercules, 74 x Centurion, 20 x Yellow Moon and 12 x Jermore - all gone into modules awaiting some nice top and root growth before planting out.

My shallots (and garlic - rather late with these this time around) went in the ground about a fortnight ago. Right before it started snowing again. But they seem happy enough - and up here at the foot of the Ochils near Stirling the soil is anything but warm!

Havent got the onions in yet, but hoping too as soon as the rain stops....

I was wondering this as well. I think I might try the modules, I have a load of those fibre pots that I might use then I won't disturb the roots when I plant them in.

Mine are still growing in one of my blow-away-greenhouses, I'm waiting till there about 4" tall and I have the ground ready.
