How much room do you have Emily?

I'd say my plot is about 9' x 4' maybe, plus I have pots on the patio

How come your carrots failed? What happened?

No idea, think my soil is no good for them, it's quite heavy. They just never germinated!

They probably did - but were nibbled by slugs before you could even see them.

I think Zaz is right on the money there. They graze mine off as they appear too, unless I use some kind of slug killer

They also might not get through the soil if it caps (goes crusty). Mine does, so now I sow a drill of carrot seed and top it with mpc, not soil
