Microgreens and Sprouting Seeds

I've grown a few of each from special seeds labelled specifically for microgreens or sprouting seeds, my question is, can I use any seeds?

I've inherited a huge bag full of seeds from my dad, most of them I will never use in my little garden, plus alot are out of date.

Are there any seeds which are particularly good to sprout, or as microleaves and (probably most importantly) are there any which cant be used and would be poisonous if eaten?

I'm thinking it would be a good way to use them up, rather than just throwing them all out, plus I love microgreens

I don't know the answer to your question, but if the seeds can't be sprouted and eaten, you could always make some bird feeder balls with the seeds?

Anything that's a brassica you can eat the leaves of, including radishes. Tomatoes big no no. Don't think you can eat cukes and pumpkins leaves either - though I don't know if they'd kill you. Pea shoots you can eat - not sure about broadies or runners - I highly doubt it. Herbs obviously yes, onions/spring onions yes er.. what else have you got?

Excellent thread, will tune in for more info - first time success with sprouts, exciting. I have out of date seeds which would be good for micro or sprouting. Any tips on best ways to do this welcome. Thanks XX

You should be very wary of sprouting any old "garden" seeds - they may have been treated with fungicides or worse

Any edibles that you would eat the leaves of as a fully grown veggie can be grown as microgreens. Some crops are better than others. Lettuce = tasteless, spinach = doesnt like being grown as a microgreen. Be careful to avoid seeds if yours may have been treated with fungicide and the like.
