My dad had a gardening accident on Thursday which resulted in some awful injuries.
He had done something that I know I have done in the past - and probably most of us from time to time.
He was cutting back the tree that was creeping through from next door, but we arent exactly sure what happened next and neither does he remember. We think he tripped and fell backwards, hitting the back of his head on the corner of the coldframe. 7 stitches were needed in hospital.
But this wasn't the worse injuy he got. Before pruning he had been sowing seed directly into the ground. They are plagued with cats, so to keep them off he put a net over the top and secured it down with short canes. Either as he fell, or after he hit his head, one of these canes went straight through his calf muscle! Blood was everywhere! It has split the muscle and the consultants advised against stitching as it would need the muscle stitching first, then the skin. They have glued it together at the moment and strapped his foot so he cannot flex it as this will reopen the wound.
Needless to say but I removed all my short canes from my allotment today
My dad is ok though, now home from hospital but very black and blue. I think he is looking forward to the nurse coming every day to dress his wounds!
