This is a good way to support heavy fruit.

Please ignore everything I say, I make it up as I go along, not only do I generally not believe what I write, I never remember it either.

I've read that left unsupported the pumpkin/squash stalks should just thicken up accordingly. The idea being to build a structure strong enough to hold the plant and fruits (which you'd need to do anyway with the tights approach) and leave it to its own devices.

The author reckoned he got a better crop from a climbing squash than a sprawling one too.

I grew my tromboncino squash over a cheap metal arch last year. Fixed some netting to it and the squash just romped away. This year I have a second arch and am going to do the same with a different variety of squash as well as the tromboncino.
