The seed splits in the middle and the shoot will come from centre of the kidney shape. I've never had a problem with which way up they go in the ground. On end or side.
Just shove them in and don't worry about it - they're pretty reliable and almost always come up right

To be honest never thought about it just push em in the compost.
The only ones I have any had any problem with was White Lady which seemed prone to turning to mush. Did them in root trainers last year and got much better results.

When you germinate beans on paper, as I often do, the root come out of the scar and goes straight out, so I sow scar down, or root down if I have germinated on paper.
