When to plant out spuds?

That's half the spud planting done!

Generally go in around week 12 in these parts.... Kestral, Charlotte & Roosters.... all we need now is some rain while we wait for the taps to come on.

I'm having an experimental year, mine went it a couple of weeks ago in a large wooden planter we made last year. I've covered the soil with fleece as frost are still likely here for a good few weeks. We'll just have to wait and see what happens!

Did mine last year the same as Zaz - st paddys day.

However, this year I've left mine in a paper sack, and they've all rotted.(too much on the go in the house, and in the garden, and now on the allotment). Shall pop down and pick some more up on the way home I think!

I don't plant mine out until 7th April, otherwise its a fight to keep the frost off them.

Plant out half your First Early now, and the other half (plus the Mains etc) in a week or two's time if you are not sure?

I've never really understood why you stagger the planting times if mains take longer to reach maturity. As a lot of books suggest I tend to plant Mains later in April but can you plant them all at the same time?

I've just planted my Charlottes this weekend and earthed them up.

Personally I like to get earlies in during February. If the tops happen to get frosted they will still recover and if it stays mild you can begin cropping by late May.

Mine went into their bags the weekend before last - they'll be topped up with compost as they start to show - fingers crossed re frosts

I've never understood this either and plant all of mine at the same time. When I'm doing maincrop, which isn't often, as they always get blight (well not last year).

My first two rows go in around St Valentines day, only six foot rows. So they have been in about six weeks and they still have not appeared above ground. I find it easy enough to keep the frost off just a couple of short rows with fleece and cloches. The ones in the bags in the greenhouse are romping away. Don't grow maincrop due to blight.
