Why can't I ...?

I've followed the threads here about sprouting seeds - tried it loads of times, including three times this year. I placed the seeds on damp kitchen paper, kept them in a reasonably warm - sometimes really warm - place, but have never had them sprout.

If someone can tell me where I'm going wrong, I'd really appreciate it.

what seeds are you trying to sprout? And do you soak them overnight first?
If they are very warm, they will be drying out - cover them with something: a pop bottle, glass plate, clingfilm ... you can see the moisture in my sprouting pots here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/26032713@N05/5501426375/

Try them in a Tupperware box. Give them a good soaking for an hour or more then drain most of the water off. Then rinse them a couple of times a day. Leave the lid on........and you probably don't need the paper.

That was advice from two sheds and it has worked wonderfully for me.

Ditto for me. Twice tried with parsnip seeds in a tupaware box on damp kitchen paper with clingfilm over the top. Half given up for now but next time will soak them overnight first as advised

Parsnip doesn't need soaking, only large or hard seeds benefit from it. It does need to be fresh though... if you get low germination, buy some more

I took the advice of soaking them first, then drained most of the water and put in a plastic box with a loose-fitting lid. I tried with brandywine tomato seeds and some supermarket chilli seeds.

The brandywine seeds have sprouted and are sown today. Still waiting for the chilli, but very happy with my result.
