  • Purple Haze Carrot

    Anyone grown these? I bought some seed yesterday and am interested in knowing about the variety as I chose them on a whim.

    You read my mind !!! just got my carrot seeds packets out to have a ponder about purple haze. Have prepared half a bed today for carrots and want to get some on the go tomorrow ( hope it's not too early). Spent half the day emptying the bed and sieving the soil back in , mixing it with compost. Have had a bit of a gander on the tinterweb. It would seem they take 70 days to fully mature, are best raw, very lightly steamed or roasted within an inch of their life. Look lovely on the pictures and unlike the purple beans , it says they keep their colour on cooking

      Grown these the last few years, they look really good with a bunch of other coloured carrots and taste good too, they're my sons favorite so I rarely get a look in when I bring them home.
      Jiving on down to the beach to see the blue and the gray, seems to be all and it's rosy-it's a beautiful day!

        They sound good then thanks! My son hates carrots so am hoping to win him round with something that looks a little different from the norm.

        I too am itching to get going with my carrot bed but the seed packet suggests sowing from May. Do have early nantes too which I intend to sow in April.

        What is the yellow variety called? Does anyone know.

          They grow well and look good, unfortunately they aren't my favourite carrots as they are quite strong tasting and i like a milder type. All in all though, if you like strong carroty tastes then you'll love these.
          My favourite carrots are creme de lite, now they are yummy.

            Are they cream coloured? Never heard of them. Am intrigued.

                      I grew them last year - they kept well after picking (ziplock freezer bag in the fridge). I grew them in pots:



                      They were reasonably tasty - but early nantes out class them in terms of speed of growth and taste. Autumn King for me, worked amazing - I had HUGE carrots - think one was 600g).

                        Now that's just bragging CM (wink)! I am thinking some orange, some purple, and some yellow or cream and confuse that son of mine!

                          No idea how it got that big, that was grown in normal, stoney garden soil, the bed was deep - and I had dug it to loosen the soil (double dug) - sods inverted, covered in newspaper, soaked and back filled. I presume the tap root went right down to seek the water which is why it fattened up so much.

                          I ate most of those carrots raw when wandering around the garden! That big one went into carrot and parsnip soup - that one, plus a huge parsnip made 1 big vat of soup. Frugal! [why do I always spell parsnip parnsip?!]


                          ETA:

                          I only had about 2 carrots affected with root fly - I sowed very thinly, and picked either very early morning, or late on when it wasn't windy.. didn't protect them any other way - may have just been lucky though!

                            I wouldn't recommend white carrots (well not the ones I've had... they are hard and taste like turnips. Hang on ....no, they were carrots)

                              Yes, even tenderly steamed and smothered in best butter. He never used to - just going through a teenage phase! Daughter loathed mushrooms too. I make a lot of soup - thank goodness for blenders!!

                              Might look for the baby sweet ones as well then.
