  • Overwintering Onion leaves starting to go yellow

Thought that meant they were close to maturing but that point isn't due for another 40 days or so. could it be a sign of damage? Its only the tips down about 3cm.

    Chef. Top tip.

About now - loosen the soil around them, just on the surface, sprinkle some organic root veg fertiliser around them and give them a good water. If you have any seaweed extract, add that into the watering can.

Thanks. Will do that tomorrow, stuck at work all day today. will loosening the soil with a hoe be sufficient?

Just be gentle. It's to let the water in and loosen the soil so that they can swell up.

Preferable to do it by hand - we call it 'fingering your onions' - Mrs Dobby taught it to me a few years back.

Yellowing of the leaves can also be the first sign of disease (white rot?) Try getting a hold of the leaves and giving a light tug. If the set comes out of the ground and have very few roots with white fur around the bottom, suspect the worst!
Hopefully a loosening of the soil and a bit of a feed witll put them to rights though!

My over-wintered onions are similar - yellowing bits from the tips downwards about 3cm or so. They're in pots though, so I'm wondering if I should do anything differently? I've tried to be careful with watering so I'd be surprised if it's that. Maybe they need feeding, I wonder?
