<grin> - I'm being very disciplined (ha!) and only sowed 2 seeds per pot or module of each variety I want (only one will get into the greenhouse) - and checked before I did a second sowing! That's tomatoes, at least - think the chilis went a bit mad! Plant sale coming up...

What to do with 100 tomato plants?

I always so too many, but this year I've lost loads too - some never germinated (don't get me started), I lost some to chilly windowsill syndrome(even though I left the curtains open), lost a few to damping off (homemade compost - again, don't get me started) and recently two got decpitated by wind-causing-dismantling of-blowaway-roof-joint syndrome. I'll give some to me mum, some to me god-daughter, prob won't bother with my brother and his family as they just kill them and if I have any spare I'll freegle them. Then I will tell myself not to sow so many next year.Last edited by Shadylane; 04-04-2011, 08:48 AM.

Not that it's always applicable, but I'd urge you to try and accommodate as many of your own tommie plants as you can in your own garden, because giving or selling homegrown tomatoes to your neighbours and villagers is a superb way of making friends, and money.
Don't be shy of selling stuff that you grow, because if you grow tasty quality produce, you'll find that everyone you know suddenly comes out of the woodwork and wants to know you and have anything for free that you're willing to give them.
Believe me - I've been there?! And there's nothing wrong with doing that, but you get tired of growing stuff for free for anyone that'll take it , you can ultimately please, and save them a trip to the shops, which saves time and fuel for them, but adds £s to your own Piggy Bank.
So give it some thought in amongst what's been spoken about here maybe......

One of my neighbours who buys my eggs has already said that she'd be happy to buy tomatoes from me. And I'm fairly certain that one of my other neighbours would too. I've been thinking of putting a sign outside my door saying "Free range eggs for sale". Maybe I should instead put one up saying fresh vegetables for sale. I'll see if I can get enough pots together to keep them for myself. As I said my patio is rather large. The only problem with that is the chickens who will eat anything that isn't netted off. I suppose I could just net off the whole patio. lol! I've built 13 raised beds in the garden but I haven't got round to digging over the ground and cutting out the turf in all of them. So far I've done 2.5 of them! One has broad beans and peas in and the other is being used as a dust bath by the chooks. I've got to get my potatoes planted but I've been thinking of using rubble sacks. I shall probably try to sort that out as soon as I can. I've got 101 other jobs waiting to be done!I do Charity Wild food walks. Check out www.msitu.co.uk

I had 23 plants last year for four of us, well 3 really as youngest doesnt like them. I am still eating the chutney!
I have sowed some this year and tried to be good. Needless to say it hasn't worked. I will be good though and compost some of them, honest.WPC F Hobbit, Shire police

if blight comes this year think of all that mess you will have to get rid of !
i usually end up with about 50 asst types, but never seem to get more than about half ripe before the weather changes or blight appears.so yuo might use more than you think.a good put down line to use !
If having brains was a fatal disease, you would be the only survivor.

I did this last year and ended up donating a lot to the RSPCA plant sale. There are plant fairs that you could sell some at, check your local council websites. As Zaz suggests, pick the best/strongest plants for yourself. I had 8 trays with 3 plants in each which I grew in my greenhouse = nightmare.Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better...Albert Einstein
